So week two of the Organizing Revolution over at A Bowl Full of Lemons is tackling the kitchen.  I’m not going to lie, I was a little hesitant over this one.

My kitchen hasn’t been touched (beyond daily cleaning such as dishes and wiping the counters) since Munchkin#2 was born.  Between coming home with a new baby and the whirlwind of activity that was Christmas, deep cleaning or organizing the kitchen wasn’t really my top priority.

I didn’t really have faith in my ability to get the entire kitchen organized this week so I only snapped a few “before” pictures before I got to work during nap time.

I got on a roll, though and ended up organizing all but two of my kitchen cabinets…the snack cabinet and the cabinet above the fridge that only holds stuff we rarely use.

I moved my cookie sheets and cooling racks into the cabinet underneath the sink, taking advantage of the long, narrow space.  They work much better in here, instead of sliding out of a precarious stack and ending up on the floor when I try to get to the one at the bottom of the pile.

The pantry cabinet is WAY more functional now that everything is labeled and has a specific home.  However, I realized quickly that the round white baskets aren’t exactly the most efficient use of space.  Diaper wipe refill boxes fit much better and give me more space to store pantry goods, so I’ll be replacing the baskets over time as we buy more wipes (with a new baby, that will be easy!).  I have a project up my sleeve to make them look a little more appealing that will be featured on an upcoming Mini Project Monday.

I love that I can see all my baking dishes now and know exactly where everything fits properly.  I plan to make labels to hold myself (and maybe hubby 🙂 ) accountable when putting away the dishes.

I can see everything in my baking cabinet now as well…and better yet, won’t start making a recipe only to find that I am out of an ingredient, or three!

No more falling appliances!  Everything in the small appliances cabinet is accessible without risking bodily harm to myself.

My counters are clear!  Love it!  Now, I just have to figure out what to do with the box of “stuff that doesn’t belong here but I don’t know where to put it”.  The white bucket to the right of the sink is for holding overflow dishes once the dishwasher is full because I HATE dirty dishes everywhere…now to get hubby to use it!

I impatiently await the day that I have a fully functioning/beautifully designed laundry room.  Unfortunately, it’s not very high on the priority list at the moment, so I comfort myself by browsing through Pinterest, looking for ideas to inspire me and DIY project to include.  Here are some of my favourites:

I’m rather drawn to this industrial style laundry room.  I like the frosted glass in the door and the cabinet doors…except that you have to keep everything very orderly, haha!  I’m definitely going to find cute glass jars to hold my laundry detergent and fabric softener.

I have had my eye on one of these drying racks for YEARS!  I love the beadboard in the back and am fighting with myself about whether I want a traditional style or industrial style laundry room.

This is one of the reasons why I’m leaning towards a traditionally styled laundry room.  Who wouldn’t want a chandelier in their laundry room?  I just know that hubby is going to look at me funny but I want it!

I was in the mood to clean and organize the other day and I spent a good three hours working around the house tackling various tasks.  Munchkin had been whisked away by his grandmother (thanks Mom!) and I was determined to make the most of his absence so I was on a mission!

Hubby was home from work a little earlier than normal and for some reason, he cloistered himself in our bedroom.  Apparently, crossing my path when I’m cleaning is not something he wanted to risk.  Go figure.

Anyways, I did some work in the kitchen and decided that I had had enough of the disorganization underneath our kitchen sink.  Someday, I will have custom built shelves to organize that space, but until then…sigh.

I pulled everything out and discarded a few things.  The empty milk cartons are for a winter project I hope to do this year.  Once I put everything back in, it fit a lot better…and will hopefully stay this way.  Which means I’ll have to conquer my habit of opening the door, tossing something in and closing it quickly before the item can fall out!

I found an idea on Pinterest to store my freezer paper, aluminum foil, wax paper and sandwich baggies in an upright magazine holder and they’re tucked into the side of the under-sink cabinet.  This freed up a lot of space in my spice drawer, which was sadly in need of attention.

I’m a firm believer that plastic baggies (unless they’ve been used for meat) can be reused at least once…good for the environment and my pocketbook.  What I lacked was a good place to store them.  They usually just got tossed into the spice drawer and floated around, getting in my way when I’m cooking.  Once the drawer was reorganized, I now have a clearly designated space for the baggies…which means I won’t get frustrated and throw them all out after one use anyways.  Sigh…much better!

I love little five minute organizing projects like these.  It’s hard to believe but they make a huge difference in my sanity when I’m working in the kitchen and my space actually is functional!

Today, I tackled the third bedroom in our house.  And I won.  Finally!

Every since we moved in over three years ago, this room has been relegated to storage room status.  Everything that didn’t have a designated place (and a few things that did) ended up in this room.  I don’t think very many of our friends and family have actually seen this room…since the door is always closed when company is over.

I have tried several times to corral the mess in the third bedroom and have failed each time.  But because we’re hoping to move our munchkin down into this room in the next few months, I was determined to win.

I didn’t get a before picture, but that’s probably a good thing.  The after picture is no less exciting!

It hasn’t looked this clean since the day we closed on the house sale.  The closet has a few things inside and the old bed is still there, but the room is pretty much ready to be painted next week!
In the process of cleaning out the bedroom, I had to figure out how to condense most of our office supplies into one small filing cabinet drawer in the basement.  The desk is now part of my scrapbooking area and I needed more space for my supplies, so all the pens, pencils, post-it notes and other miscellaneous office things were organized into some pretty containers and stored in the drawer.  The papers and such now take up residence in a large IKEA Branas basket.

Well, I had wonderful intentions to finish strong in my final month of serious decluttering to completely my 365 challenge.  It didn’t happen, haha.

I did get rid of a few things but I meant to go through all my old jewelry and a few areas in the house that needed some decluttering attention.  Life got in the way however, and I didn’t get rid of as many things I had hoped.  Although, I did get rid of my old car…to make room for the brand new 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe that now fills its spot in the driveway!

Here are my totals:
bathroom:  2
electronics:  4 (thanks to my hubby for these ones!)
bedroom:  3

Total for June:  9     Yearly Total:  442

A year of decluttering and 442 things gone from my house.  I can’t say as I’ve missed anything I’ve gotten rid of, especially the clothes I hadn’t worn for years a long time but couldn’t let go of.

Does my house feel any ‘lighter’?  If I’m honest…not really.  Our spare bedroom is still a disaster; our garage is full of furniture to be finished and hardwood floors for the basement along with other various junk; the basement hasn’t really changed much at all…it’s still got too much stuff and not enough organized storage.

I have the most awful time trying to keep my little munchkin’s closet clutter-free.  The last time it was neat and tidy was before he was born a long time ago!

His closet is overrun by clothes that are too big, clothes that are too small…my wedding dress too!  We also were storing several garbage bags worth of hand-me-downs from friends of ours because I was previously too lazy to sort through them.

Last week, I finally buckled down and sorted through all the clothes, storing away the ones munchkin has grown out of (old diaper boxes work great for this!) and hanging up a lot of the donated clothes.  Thankfully, he hadn’t grown out of many of them yet!  My wedding dress remains there just because we don’t have room for it in our master closet and because munchkin isn’t at a stage where he can do much damage to it…yet (I’d better knock on wood now that I’ve said that!).

Eventually, I want to put in more shelving but there are MANY more projects that need to be tackled first…the list is too long to share.  Something I want to do soon is make some hanger signs to indicate the clothing sizes…there’s so many different size ranges that we have right now, waiting for munchkin to grow more and I’d love to be able to pick a shirt without having to search for the right size.  But for now, I’m happy with how the closet looks…finally!

This month, I really left my decluttering efforts until the last minute…like, five minutes ago!  Prior to today, I had gotten rid of one item so I just went racing around the house looking for things to purge so I could write this post!

But, I managed to get rid of  39 items in that short amount of time!  I put a bunch of stuff into my ongoing Goodwill box, including some kitchen towels I bought but never used and some pot holders I’ve never used.  I got rid of some decorations I bought a casino party we threw for New Year’s ages ago.

I am also getting rid of 9 pairs of patterned scrapbooking scissors.  I figured that 18 pairs is enough and since that’s what will fit in the wooden holder I have, I have to lose the rest of them.  If anyone in the London/St. Thomas area wants them, let me know!

Here’s the breakdown of the things purged this month:
bathroom:  5
kitchen:  10
scrapbooking:  9
miscellaneous:  15

Total for March:  39!  This brings my running total to 335 in 9 months!

…but until then, I make do with a little computer work, plain white paper, scrapbook paper and packing tape.

Packing tape is awesome.

Sorry, just had to say it.

Anyways, I’ve been frustrated with one of my bottom kitchen cabinets…specifically the one that holds our assortment of food storage containers.  We have plastic and glass ones of all different sizes and shapes.  Here is the before:

I decided to finally break down and organize instead of dealing with the dysfunction any longer.  I pulled everything out and got rid of a few things that didn’t belong…who needs epsom salts in the kitchen?

I grouped all the like containers together and things that I don’t use often (roasting pan, glass drink dispensing canister) still got shoved to the back of the cabinet.  Everything else  was sorted and labelled as it went back into the cabinet.  Much better, right?

I’m hoping the labels will help hubby when he unloads the dishwasher for me…I’ll have to wait and see!

Well, I tried.

Yesterday, I showed you the before pictures of our garage and today, I attempted to restore it to some semblance of order.  I call it a success, but we’re still not at the point where we can park one of the cars inside.  There are a lot of boxes that need to be recycled and bags of garbage that need to be taken away (that will take a few weeks to get rid of).  Once that’s done, we can move the basement flooring against the wall and out of the middle of the garage, thus making it possible to park inside.  Yay!

One thing I learned….no, sorry, two things:
-I NEVER want to let it get so disorganized again
-the need for garage shelving along the entire length of the wall has moved up a few notches in my priority list!

Tomorrow, I tackle the garage.  I’ve waited all winter for a spike in the temperature that was significant enough so I wouldn’t freeze while I organized it.  It’s been a complete disaster area for months and I just can’t stand it anymore.

I HATE that we can’t park one of the cars in the garage anymore.  Probably about 90% of the people on our street don’t use their garage for parking at all and I swore I would never become one of those people…but alas, I now am.

It started when we ordered laminate flooring for the basement.  It was delivered on a pallet, which never got moved and the mess went on from there.  It’s almost impossible to get the garbage from outside the kitchen door though the garage and out to the curb without tripping over something.  I can’t get to the storage project I’ve been working on the kitchen wall or anything else for that matter without climbing over tools, cardboard boxes, the stroller…I could go on and on, but I won’t…I’ll show you instead.

Wish me luck, because I’m going to need it!
