Weekend Getaway

Posted on: May 31, 2010

This past weekend, the Dodds girls congregated and took off to spend the weekend in Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, complete with token male in the form of my three month old son, D.  After a forgotten purse and mandatory stop at Tim Horton’s, we were on our way, arriving in Niagara Falls around 11:30.  We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast, the Glen Mhor Guesthouse (http://www.glenmhor.com/) and with 11 of us in total, we had the whole place to ourselves!  It had a beautiful view of the Niagara River below the Falls.  We took the very manageable 25 minute walk to the Falls and enjoyed the sights for a while before stopping for lunch (again at Tim Horton’s since we weren’t in the mood to pay the outrageously expensive prices).  We attempted to take the Journey Behind the Falls, but there was a 90 minute wait so instead, we headed for the IMAX theatre to take in the Falls movie.  To kill the 45 minutes before the movie, we strolled through the Daredevil Gallery.  This attraction highlights those who dared to brave the Falls and detailed their stunts, complete with the actual contraptions used to protect them from the rushing water and deadly rocks.  It was quite interesting to read about the different daredevils throughout the years (the first ever being a woman in 1901 who went over with a supposedly black cat who came out white afterwards!) and their motivation for wanting to survive the falls…most wanting fame and fortune and few getting it.  The IMAX movie was also entertaining, telling of the various native legends surrounding the Falls and also showing the incredible story of a young boy who survived a trip down the giant waterfall in only a life jacket!  After the movie, we headed back in the direction of our guesthouse, taking a trip down the legendary Clifton Hill (we did not stop for any haunted houses, haha).  We did, however, have to take a detour into the Hershey store where we spent quite a bit of time!  I got chocolate-covered pretzels for me and my hubby, and said a silent prayer that they wouldn’t melt in the car the next day.  For dinner that night, we went to a Parisian restaurant that specialized in crepes, which most of us had (actually, we all intended to have a savoury crepe for dinner, but one of us didn’t get what she expected!).  I had a cheese and ham crepe for dinner, followed by a raspberry-strawberry-blueberry-peach crepe with caramel (incidentally, my dessert cost more than my dinner!).  After dinner, we picked up my sister and headed back to the Falls (this time by car) to see them illuminated in the darkness.  We had hoped to get out and watch for a while, but since we weren’t willing to pay $20 in parking for a 15 minute stay, we opted just for a drive-by viewing.  After arriving back at the guesthouse, we had a pajama party baby shower for D and I (I already love my Wii Fit Plus!).  The next morning, after a delicious breakfast of French toast and sausages and a group photo session at the front of the B&B, we headed off to Niagara-on-the-Lake.  We took a hike partway down the Bruce trail before heading back to the park to relax.  After a breastfeeding debacle that lasted about three hours (but felt more like six!), we had lunch at a restaurant called Bistro Six-One, whose most popular offering was very delicious pizza.  We then split up and browsed the shops on Queen Street and stopped for ice cream  before lounging in the park for a while, just chatting and relaxing.  The weekend getaway ended with a brief walk down to the water, prayer for thanksgiving for our wonderful family and group hug.  After one last stop at Tim Horton’s, we all headed in our separate directions, thankful for the time spent together not only as family, but sisters in Christ!

a breast feeding debacle? I don’t really think I want to know. glad it was solved in only 3 hours (instead of six) and that you all had a great time.
